Root canal treatment (also known as endodontics) is a dental procedure used to treat infection at the centre of a tooth. Deep inside each tooth is a soft area called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When this pulp becomes infected due to deep decay, a crack, or an injury, it can cause significant pain and lead to an abscess if left untreated. During the procedure, the infected pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed to prevent further issues.
Our dentist, Dr Nassib Al-Sibassi, can provide a thorough assessment of your needs and will be able to confirm whether you need root canal treatment. There are several common symptoms to look out for:

The root canal treatment process is typically spread over one or two appointments:
Preparation: We ensure the area is completely numb with local anaesthetic, so you feel comfortable throughout.
Cleaning: A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the infected pulp. Our dentists carefully remove the bacteria and diseased tissue.
Filling: Once cleaned and shaped, the root canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed temporarily with a crown.
Restoration: The tooth is checked at a later visit, and when there are no further signs of infection, we restore its full function, with a permanent filling or a crown placed on top.

The length of your appointment usually depends on the complexity of the tooth being treated; for example, molars have more canals to clean than front teeth. On average, a root canal treatment session takes between 60 and 90 minutes. In some cases, the procedure can be completed in a single visit, but if there is a significant infection, your dentist may place a disinfectant inside the tooth and ask you to return for a second appointment a week or two later to ensure it is completely clear before providing the final seal.
While root canal treatment has a very high success rate, like any medical procedure, there is a small chance of failure. This usually occurs if the tooth has unusually curved or narrow canals that were difficult to clean fully, or if a new fracture or deep decay allows bacteria to re-infect the area. If a treatment does fail, you might notice the return of pain or swelling. The good news is that many “failed” root canals can be successfully treated again with a procedure called endodontic retreatment to save the tooth.
Whenever possible, it is almost always better to save your natural tooth through a root canal rather than having it extracted. Keeping your own tooth preserves your natural bite, prevents the surrounding teeth from shifting out of place, and avoids the bone loss that can happen when a tooth is missing. While an extraction might seem like a quicker fix, replacing a missing tooth with a bridge or an implant is often more costly and time-consuming in the long run than simply repairing the tooth you already have.
The most common sign that you might need a root canal is persistent, throbbing pain, especially when you bite down or apply pressure. You might also notice extreme sensitivity to hot and cold that lingers long after the drink or food is gone. Other red flags include a tooth that is darkening in colour or a small, pimple-like bump on the gums, which can indicate an abscess. However, some infections don’t cause any pain at all and are only spotted during a routine X-ray, which is why regular dental check-ups are so important for catching issues early.
